Bible Verses for Caregivers – Kind Words | by Linda Brendle

Kind Words Prov 16 24

Mom exhibited the first signs of Alzheimer’s in what I call conversational loops. She would tell the same story or ask the same question three times in five minutes. Unfortunately, I didn’t always respond with kind words. The possibility of losing her to this mind-wasting disease frightened and angered me, and sometimes, I took it out on her. One morning while she and Dad were still living on their own, I stopped by to take her to the doctor, and she was having a bad morning. I guess I was, too. I don’t remember exactly what I said to her, but she looked at me with hurt in her eyes and said, “Well, you don’t have to make me feel bad about it.” I don’t have to tell you how small I felt.

Later on, when they were living with me and she was further away mentally, she would come to me in an agitated state. She would struggle with words, trying to express whatever concern she had. More often than not, she was unsuccessful, and her agitation increased. Fortunately, I had mellowed a bit, and most times I responded more kindly. Wrapping her in a big hug, I’d smile and say, “It’s okay, Mom. Why don’t you go back and watch TV with Dad. I’ll be right here, and you can come tell me when you remember what it was.” She would relax and smile, and then she’d go sit down until the next time she needed some kind words.

Blessings,

Linda

Bible Verses for Caregivers – Not Alone | by Linda Brendle

3strandcord Ecc 4 12

Of the many unity rituals that are included in wedding ceremonies, one of my favorites is the cord of three strands. Based on Ecclesiastes 4:12, it is an outward indication that the couples intends to include God in their marriage–that by intertwining their two lives with His, their union will be strong and not easily broken.

This same principle can be applied to caregiving. When the needs of a loved one require our involvement, too many of us try to be super heroes and go it alone. When God created the human race, He created us to live in community with each other, to lift each other up in times of hardship and trouble. Adam had Eve, Moses had Aaron, and Paul had Timothy. Even Jesus needed His earthly companions to help Him carry out His mission.

As a caregiver, you have an extremely difficult task ahead of you, but the disease or disability will not prevail if you enlist a team to help you. Above all, include God as your team leader, but then reach out to friends, family, organizations, and professionals for help. A cord of three strands is not easily broken.

Blessings,

Linda

Bible Verses for Caregivers – Trust in the Lord | by Linda Brendle

Trust in the Lord

There are many times when a caregiver simply does not understand. Why does my loved one have to go through this? How am I going to get through the day? Where do I get the help I need? Who has the answers to these unanswerable questions? In times like these, when my understanding is simply not adequate, I can lean on Him who understands all things from an eternal perspective. May you find comfort and peace today in knowing that you are understood and loved.

Blessings,

Bible Verses for Caregivers – Our Helper | by Linda Brendle

God is our helper

What a perfect description of most caregivers–needy, poor, and without a helper. And what a promise–that He delivers us when we call on Him. May you find the helper you need today.

Bible Verses for Caregivers – A Joyful Heart | by Linda Brendle

A Joyful Heart

Do you feel like your role as a caregiver has crushed your spirit and dried up your bones? Maybe you’re not finding enough joy in your life.

This picture was taken on New Year’s Eve of 2011 at the assisted living facility where Mom spent her last months. The families had been invited to dine and party with the residents, and we took the opportunity for some group photos. We had some really good laughs as we tried to keep Mom focused on the camera and keep her hands down. Joyful times like this will raise the most downtrodden spirit and bring life to the driest of bones.

Mom and me.

Happy New Year, Everyone!

Make some joyful memories of your own today.

Blessings,

Linda

Bible Verses for Caregivers – Relax, Give Thanks, Pray | by Linda Brendle

Kids asleep

When was the last time you rested like this? These children don’t worry–they leave that to the big people. They may sometimes whine for the latest toy, but they also find time to be thankful for the beauty of a dandelion or the wonder of an ant. Most of all, they don’t hesitate to come to Mom or Dad when they need something. The next time you have trouble sleeping, remember the Philippians 4:6 method–relax, be grateful, and pray.

Blessings,

Linda
